April Seminar Series

KRUK presents the seminar series for having an opportunity to know about the traumatic events that occurred in April; Jeju April 3rd, 4.16 Sewol Ferry Tragedy, and Hillsborough.

You can find brief information about each event below. Three cases look separated and different, but we will open the session asking 'what is the role of the public and nation for the trauma survivors?' From the series of traumatic events, we will find the answer to what we can learn and what we can do to prevent a similar event in the future.

[Session 1 - 3rd of April 11:00 UK time] Do you know 'Jeju Sasam'?

The first session is for understanding the historical background of 'Jeju Sasam' also known as Jeju April 3rd or Jeju 4.3 Incident. What is Jeju Sasam and what happened 73 years ago on Jeju Island?

[Session 2 - 4th of April 11:00 UK time] Listen to the voices

A survivor from the Jeju Sasam will testify what she experienced from her view of Jeju Sasam.

[Session 3 - 9th of April 18:30 UK time] What we can do?

Talk with Dr Anne Eyre in the last session. Jeju Sasam, 4.16 Sewol Ferry Tragedy of Korea,

and Hillsborough Stadium Disaster in the UK will be discussed together.

The sessions will be streamed by Zoom. We will send the link to your email after your registration. Session 1 and 2 are delivered in Korean but the English translation will be provided.

Jeju April 3rd

“The April 3rd Uprising and Massacre” (also known as Jeju April 3rd or Jeju Sasam) was a tragic incident that happened between 1 March 1947 and 21 September 1954 on Jeju Island. It was a chaotic period right after the independence from Japan and the Korean Peninsula was in the middle of the Cold War. Some people, including the first President of South Korea and the US government, wanted to establish a separate government in South Korea while others wanted to establish a unified country with the North.

Jeju islanders courageously stood up against the division of the Korean peninsula and strongly protested against the first election that happened only in South Korea in 1948. Unfortunately, military and police officers severely cracked down on Jeju islanders and around 30,000 people (10% of Jeju's total population) lost their lives during this period.
